California (US) and New Zeland USGS Seismic Hazard Maps

St. Peters, Missouri –Arcoplast Sealed Interior Wall and Ceiling System assemblies were installed and tested under worst case US (California) and New Zealand (Otira/Arthurs Pass) conditions. Applied Technical Services, Inc. (ATS) conducted a structural analysis using the finite element method to determine compliance with ICC-ES_AC156 and NZS 4219 (2009). To  assess compliance with US standard ICC-ES AC 156 a frequency response analysis was performed using calculated inputs from the worst case California location available. A simplified global model of the wall and coving sections was modeled for this analysis. New Zealand Standards (NZS) required that the structure support a static load based on location, weight, and installation type. The required force was calculated and compared to current test data. New Zealand Standards (NZS) also required that the structure support a relative shift between the ceiling and upper floor. The required relative displacement was calculated. A detailed 1.5 ft. section of wall was modeled including full panels, coving, and two bolts per stud. An equivalent displacement for the 1.5 ft. section was calculated by dividing 1.5 ft. (detail model extent) / 12ft (wall height) X calculated displacement.

A simplified global model was developed for the modal and frequency response assessment for US compliance. The wall assembly was represented as 2-D plates with constraints applied at the base and stud locations. Forces from the global model are extracted for assessment of localized failure. Peak stresses are reported at stud locations to be a maximum of 22 psi. This loading scenario induces stresses well below levels generated through physical testing. Therefore the structure is compliant with ICC-ES AC156.

Based on the Applied Technical Services, Inc. testing and analysis, the Arcoplast Interior Sealed Systems meets seismic requirements of NZS 4219 (2009) and ICC-ES AC156 (US). Testing done in accordance with ICC-ES_AC156 is intended to support data for the seismic certification of architectural, mechanical, electrical and other nonstructural systems, components, and elements permanently attached to structures, as specified in Section 1708.4 of the 2009 IBC or Section 1708.5 of the 2006 IBC, and Section 13.2 of ASCE 7. NZS 4219 references other New Zealand standards, Australian, American, and British standards and is intended to provide a means of compliance with the New Zealand Building Code (NZBC).
